Tax and Employment Issues for Immigrants: 

Join Anna Tavis and Udoka Odoemene, attorneys with Brooklyn Legal Services, to learn the basics of workers' rights in New York and an overview of the U.S. tax system. Topics we will discuss include:

-How to file tax returns and claim refunds

-Discrimination in the workplace

-working without a Social Security number

-cash earnings and self-employment

-IRS examinations and tax debts.

Anna C. Tavis (She/Her) is a Senior Staff Attorney at Brooklyn Legal Services. She represents low-income taxpayers in controversies before the Internal Revenue Service, with a focus on tax issues affecting immigrant workers. Anna is fluent in Russian and Spanish.

Udoka Odoemene (He/Him) is a Senior Staff Attorney at Brooklyn Legal Services. Udoka has been an attorney with BLS for eight years, four of which have been within BLS's Worker's Rights & Benefits Unit. Prior to practicing labor law, Udoka worked in BLS's Housing Unit where he represented Brooklyn tenants in housing court proceedings. Udoka's current practice focuses on providing representation for individuals who experience discrimination in the workplace, wage theft and access to unemployment insurance benefits.

Brooklyn Legal Services (BLS) has provided innovative and high-quality legal services to low-income people throughout Brooklyn for over 50 years.  Through litigation, advocacy, education, and outreach, BLS works to advance the interests of our clients and create systemic changes that strengthen and protect their communities.  In 2023 alone, we opened more than 11,300 cases, benefiting nearly 69,000 people facing a wide variety of legal issues in such areas as housing, consumer, employment and unemployment, income tax, LGBTQ advocacy, foreclosure prevention, pension, family and domestic violence, disability and HIV, education, and immigration law.  BLS has a robust history of working collaboratively with community-based organizations to identify legal trends in the communities we serve and respond to them in sustained and meaningful ways.
